Save up to $20 on TurboTax Online

You've got just over a month to file your annual tax return, meaning the time has come to start shopping for a deal on tax software.

I have something of a love/hate relationship with TurboTax, but it's been my go-to product for the last several years. Warts aside, it gets the job done.

And today it'll get it done a little cheaper. For a limited time, you can save up to $20 on TurboTax Online. That means $34.99 for for TurboTax Online Premier and $54.99 for TurboTax Online Home and Business. Both versions include e-filing for your Federal return; state costs extra (unless you simply print and mail it).

You can also shave off another 7.5 percent by starting at Ebates: Just scroll down to the third box, the one that says "save up to $20 off," and click Shop Now.

If you prefer old-school TurboTax, by which I mean a version you install from a CD, I found Home and Business (PC/Mac) for $47, plus $3.99 for shipping, from a third-party seller on Amazon. And that version includes a state e-file.

Of course, these are all fairly sophisticated tax-prep options. TurboTax and other vendors offerfree options for anyone lucky enough to be filing a 1040EZ.

And real cheapskates will no doubt want to check out TaxAct Online, which offers free tax-prep and Federal e-filing for all comers. Why didn't I lead with that option? As I said above, I'm a longtime TurboTax user, so I'm always scoping out deals on that.

Also, as a self-employed person, I suspect TaxAct won't meet my needs the way TurboTax does. If you've used the former and you're self-employed as well, let me know how it went.
